Hinoki Haven
Toronto, ON
Both the front bed and the steep rock garden at this property were in serious need of a revamp. The first step involved preparing the beds.
The front bed was cleared of weeds and existing plant material, and the soil was amended. To complement the home’s sophisticated aesthetic, a dwarf 'Hinoki False' cypress standard was placed as a focal point, accompanied by 'Macro Elizabeth Ashley' hydrangea and Japanese forest grass.
The rock garden proved more challenging, as it was overrun with orange daylilies—commonly known as "ditch lilies." To access their roots for removal, small to medium-sized rocks were removed from the bed and set aside. Once the bed was cleared of daylilies and weeds, the soil was amended, and the rocks were rearranged in a rhythmic pattern. The final planting included astilbe, catmint, coneflower, cranesbill, creeping phlox, creeping Jenny, hens and chicks, coral bells, hosta, Japanese painted fern, northern sea oats, Russian sage, and sedum.
With thoughtful design and careful execution, both garden beds now offer a refined, harmonious blend of structure and colour, enhancing the home’s curb appeal and natural beauty.
