Oblique Oasis
Toronto, ON
The front lawn of this property was removed, and the driveway was widened, which in turn narrowed the main front bed. This presented a design challenge: how to create an aesthetically pleasing modern garden while working within the narrowed space. A unique challenge required a unique solution—angling the plantings in relation to the surrounding hardscape. To establish a sense of rhythm and movement, plantings were arranged in rows with deliberate repetition, creating an undulating flow. The selection of plantings included Hydrangea paniculata 'Panflora,' Pieris japonica 'Mountain Fire,' Hakonechloa macra (Japanese Hakone Grass), Athyrium niponicum 'Pictum' (Japanese Painted Fern), Astilbe 'Maggie Daley' and 'Visions in Red,' Heuchera 'Obsidian' (Coral Bell), and Taxus cuspidata 'Nova' (Japanese Yew). The result is a modern, dynamic garden that maximizes the space, harmonizing structured repetition with soft, flowing textures to create a visually striking and inviting entrance.
