Garden Duet
Beaches, ON
In addition to each property having its own small front bed, the owners of this semi-detached home shared a garden bed between them. The individual beds were designed to reflect each homeowner’s style, while the shared section needed to accommodate both in terms of color palette and maintenance level.
The south bed was kept simple, featuring a dwarf 'Blue Star' juniper standard, lavender, and creeping Jenny. The small bed closest to the house on the south side included a 'Canadale' gold euonymus. To the north, the bed incorporated 'Sky Pencil' Japanese holly, 'Valley Valentine' Japanese pieris, 'Coral Sunset' peony (ITOH), 'Royal Wedding' oriental poppy, Japanese painted fern, and Japanese blood grass, all of which complemented the existing Japanese maples. The shared bed brought cohesion to the space with a selection of 'Compact Golden' barberry, 'Emerald Gaiety' wintercreeper, 'Sombrero Adobe Orange' coneflower, 'Uptick Yellow and Red' coreopsis, 'Dragon's Blood' sedum, and 'Moonlight Japanese' climbing hydrangea. The result is a thoughtfully designed front garden that balances individuality with harmony, creating a cohesive and inviting landscape for both homeowners.
